The Seven Hanging Valleys Trail Connection

Praia do Carvalho sits at approximately the 3.5 km mark of the Sete Vales Suspensos (Seven Hanging Valleys) trail, which runs east from Praia da Marinha to Praia de Vale Centeanes in the west. The full route covers around 6 km one way and takes roughly three hours without beach stops. Carvalho functions as the natural midpoint rest stop for hikers doing the full trail.

The trail above Carvalho offers some of the best clifftop viewpoints on the entire route. You can look directly down into the cove from the path, which gives a sense of the beach's scale before committing to the descent. The approach from the Vale Centeanes side (west) is slightly shorter and involves less elevation change than coming from Marinha. Either direction works, but most day-trippers drive to the small parking area directly above Carvalho and hike short sections rather than the full route.

A small free parking area sits directly above the beach, accessible from the road between Carvoeiro and Benagil. The lot fills completely by 09:00 during July and August, and many summer visitors find themselves parking along the verge of the approach road and walking ten minutes. If you arrive after 10:00 in peak season, plan for the walk rather than counting on a spot. Weekday mornings in June or September are dramatically easier.

There are no toilets, showers, lifeguards, or sun-bed rentals on the beach itself. One small drinks kiosk operates in the parking area above — useful for a bottle of water before you descend, but not a replacement for a packed cooler. The beach has no shade structures, so the cliffs do the work: the left (east) side of the bay catches full morning sun, while the right (west) side falls into shade by early afternoon. Choose your spot accordingly.

Pack everything you need before you go down: water, snacks, sun cream, and a bag for your rubbish. There are no bins on the sand, and keeping the beach clean is part of what keeps it undeveloped. Take all waste back up with you when you leave.

June and September offer the best balance of warm water, manageable crowds, and reliable sun. Morning light (before 11:00) hits the tunnel entrance directly and produces the clearest photos of the fossil walls and the cove beyond. Afternoon light is better for the central rock formation in the water. Plan your photography timing accordingly if that matters to you.
